The name of the business comes from the first name of the founder – Harriet Samuel. She did not use her full first name due to the fact that at the time of the jeweller’s launch, women did not have the same rights as men did, and Harriet feared that putting her name on the business would affect sales. After all, it was a long time ago. Harriet opened her first H Samuel jewellers in 1862. She did that by taking over her father-in-law’s watchmaking shop in Liverpool and moving it to Manchester. The customer had no idea who the founder was, and there are multiple letters addressing the owner of the brand as “Sir”. At first, Samuel’s jewellery company was a primarily mail order business. However, the sales were going strong, and in 1890, Harriet made the decision to open two brick-and-mortar locations: one in Preston and one in Rochdale. Throughout the years, H Samuel remained a family-owned business. In the late 1940’s, the founder’s grandsons were at the helm of the company.
