More Information About Forthglade

The company was founded in 1971 by Basil Palmer & Doug Wilkin who were at the time working in Devon by visiting abattoirs and buying meat to process and sell to the pharmaceutical industry. Three years later, Palmer got a Dobermann and soon found out there were little to no good quality foods for dogs at the time, so he decided to make one for his dog. Buying the meat off abattoirs and freezing it. By a pure accident with a broken-down lorry, they managed to sell their first batch of tripe - almost 2 tones, and that’s how the story of Forthglade began. Their first products - a frozen block of raw tripe - were sold to the first pet shops, kennels and breeders. Until 1989 they were selling only frozen food, but then the company started selling a complementary wet food range for both dogs and cats.

In 2011 Forthglade was bought by a bunch of pet lovers and grew even more. This resulted in a rebranding a year later, to keep up with the ever-changing needs of the market. Although in 2012 they excluded cats from their wet food recipes, in 2013 they introduced their first ever range catered especially to cat's needs. In 2015, they launched the first grain-free complete meals' product line, and after three decades they said goodbye to its raw frozen food. They rebranded again in 2016, and two years later, while developing many new products, they also opened a new factory on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of Forthglade.
